Neuropathy is a disease of the nerves where a single nerve or a bundle of nerve fibers are damaged and become unable to function properly. Neuropathy can be caused due to various reasons. Here at Neuropathyhub.com we offer you with all the information about compression which one of the main causes of neuropathy.
Compression is one of the chief causes of neuropathy, particularly mononeuropathy apart from diabetes, malnutrition or uremia. Compression or entrapment often leads to neuropathy in many patients.

Nerves get compressed and pressurized as a result of injury. Mostly the superficial nerves like the radial, ulnar or the peroneal nerves get compressed. Nerves can get compressed by tumors. As the tumor increases in size it may supress any of the peripheral nerves thus causing neuropathy. Hence cancer and tumor formation in patients often creates neuropathy. Patients using crutches for long time also develop neuropathy due to compression of any of the superficial nerves. Staying in a same position for long hours can also compress superficial nerves creating neuropathy. Compression neuropathy can also occur due to inflammation or entrapment and trauma.
Carpal tunnel syndrome is one of the common neuropathy diseases caused due to compression of nerves. Carpal tunnel syndrome is a quite common disease and is found to occur in many individuals. With the increased use of computers, carpal tunnel syndrome is very commonly found in individuals. This is a localized peripheral neuropathy that affects the wrist and hand. The median nerve passes through a tunnel of bones and tendons in the hand. The median nerve often becomes compressed by the bones resulting in pain and weakness. Usually the symptoms for carpal tunnel syndrome are felt during the night. Typical symptoms like weakness, paresthesia, numbness, peculiar sensations like tickling, pricking, burning or tingling are often associated with this disease. The thumb, index and middle fingers get affected first. However pain can even radiate up to the upper arm in severe cases. Patients often complain of inability to hold objects or make a fist. Mild to severe pain can be felt when suffering from carpal tunnel due to compression of the median nerve. Occupational counseling and wrist pain are given to patients suffering from carpal tunnel. Physical therapies also give some relief to patients suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome.
Like the carpal tunnel there is a similar tunnel in the foot known as the tarsal tunnel through which passes the tibial nerve. Often this tibial nerve gets compressed in the tunnel resulting in tarsal tunnel syndrome that is almost similar to the carpal tunnel syndrome of the wrist. Foot and ankle pain are the main symptoms of the disease. Shooting pain, numbness with electric shock like feelings are the general symptoms of the disease. Individuals with flat feet are more prone to developing tarsal tunnel syndrome. Diabetes and arthritis also cause compression of the tibial nerve as foot gets often swelled in these diseases.
Optic nerve injury resulting in loss of vision are also caused sometimes by compression of the optic nerve. Tumor in the area of the optic nerve or aneurysms are the main causes of compression of the optic nerve which leads to several neuropathy associated with the eye.
