Mercury

As we all know, mercury is one of the most toxin element in the world that is harmful to human beings. The physical characteristics of mercury are given below to give you a clear idea about the poisonous toxin mercury.

Mercury, Quicksilver: Hg; at. wt. 200.61; at. no. 80; valence 1-2. Silver-white colour, heavy, mobile, liquid metal that is slightly volatile at ordinary temp. d. 13.456. Solidif. at - 39° forms a tin-white, ductile, malleable mass which can be cut with a knife.

Pure mercury does not tarnish on exposure to air at ordinary temp., but when it is heated on the boiling point, the mercury slowly oxidizes to HgO and forms alloys with most metals except iron. When combined with sulfur at ordinary temperature, it is insoluble.

Though mercury is considered as poisonous, it is an important metal that is used in various instruments. The uses of mercury includes such as barometers, thermometers, thermostats, hydrometers, pyrometers; in mercury arc lamps, fluorescent lamps, mercury vapor lamps; all mercury salts, mirrors; as catalyst in oxidation of organic compounds; extracting gold and silver from ores; making amalgams, electric rectifiers, mercury fulminate, ammunition; In dental amalgams for filling teeth; in determining N by Kjeldahl method, for Millon's reagent; as cathode in electrolysis, electro analysis, exterior house paint, ceramics, and many more.

Signs and symbols of mercury poisoning:

Peripheral neuropathy (itching, burning or pain in skin), skin discoloration (pink cheeks, fingertips and toes), edema (swelling of body parts), and desquamation (dead skin peels off in layers)
