Mononeuritis Multiplex

Multifocal Neuropathy and mononeuropathy multiplex are the other medical terms by which mononeuritis multiplex is referred to. Alike the other type of neuropathy, mononeuritis multiplex is also one of the most important types. This is a condition in which a person’s two separate nerve areas are affected, either partially or totally. This disorder in both the nerve areas might happen simultaneously or serially. Mononeuritis multiplex is basically a group of symptoms which damages the nerves completely, resulting in the destruction of the axon.

An individual faces severe problem in multiple nerve areas and with the worsening of the problem the areas affected increases. Another common cause for mononeuritis multiplex can be lack of oxygen, which is generally caused due to the blood vessels getting inflamed or decrease in the blood flow.

The other causes which came up with further studies of mononeuritis multiplex are diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes mellitus and polyarteritis nodosa. Tissue diseases can also be an important cause for the increase of the intensity of mononeuritis multiplex, mainly in children. Some of the rarest causes are amyloidosis, leprosy, sjogren sundrome, forms of diabetic neuropathy, blood disorder, sarcoidosis and wegener’s granulomatosis. Numbness and tingling are the most common symptoms of neuropathy and its related nerve disorders. The other symptoms seen in people are severe pain, problem while moving a part of the body, abnormal sensation, decrease in the sensation of body parts, and stiffness feeling while moving body parts. However, in handful of cases these symptoms do not match with the patient.

Physicians and specialized doctors require tracking the history of the patient to locate the cause of mononeuritis multiplex. Several neuromuscular tests and examinations are necessary for coming to a specific conclusion. These tests are beneficial in showing the loss of movement capability and sensation in a patient. Disorder of the nerve areas can be located with proper diagnosis. Common tests for mononeuritis multiplex include nerve biopsy, nerve conduction velocity and EMG. Like any other type of neuropathy even in case of mononeuritis multiplex one must commence the treatment at an early stage, to avoid additional complication. Controlling the symptoms to inflate further should be the first step taken by the patients. Several therapies are available such as occupational therapy, physical therapy, and vocational therapy, which make a person feel independent and control the related symptoms.

Exercising and usage of braces, wheelchairs and so forth increases muscle strength and mobility. Falling and getting injured due to weakness and lack of stability is the most common way a patient can harm oneself further. For protection and safety of the patient different types of measures should be taken. Additional nerve injury at areas like elbows and knees should be avoided. Intake of regular pain relief medicines can be of certain benefit for mononeuritis multiplex pain. The risk of side affects of these medicines for mononeuritis multiplex should be kept in mind before in-taking them. For avoiding extra complications one should directly contact the physicians or doctor and start off with the treatment.
