Peripheral Neuropathy

Peripheral neuropathy is the condition in which the nerves of the peripheral nervous system get severely damaged. This generally occurs due to nerve disorder or diseases of the nerve or directly from some side effect of related kind of illness. The origin of peripheral neuropathy can vary from one patient to another. The nerves and neuromuscular joints are the areas which are majorly affected due to peripheral neuropathy. There are numerous causes due to which one is affected by peripheral neuropathy such as toxic diseases, genetic diseases, vitamin deficiency, metabolic diseases, inflammatory diseases and so forth.

Major things and diseases like radiation, HIV, chemotherapy and malignant disease are the causes of peripheral neuropathy. Vitamin deficiency like vitamin E, thiamin, vitamin B12 and Vitamin A can also cause the disorder of the nervous system.

In-take of too much of drugs, heavy metals, alcohol and organic metals also lead to peripheral neuropathy. Through a number of signs and symptoms the infection of peripheral neuropathy can be brought into notice. Loss of function is one of the most important symptoms of peripheral neuropathy apart from others like crawling, tingling, pins and needles, itching and severe pain. Numbness makes the skin so hypersensitive that contact of the body parts with other objects, especially the feet can be very painful. Tiredness, gait abnormalities, weakness, tremor, heaviness, and fasciculation are different parts of loss of function. Some of the other disorders are generalized peripheral neuropathies, radiculopathies, focal entrapment neuropathies, and plexopathies. Treatment of peripheral neuropathy should be started at the primary stage in order to prevent the deterioration of the patient’s condition.

There are several divisions of peripheral neuropathy in the medicinal world. Scroll down and know about them seperately.

Myelinopathies: This is caused due to the destruction of the myelinating Schwann cells or myelin, which results in the failure of the impulse conduction. Though there are other causes for myelinopathies; however, the main one is acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneyropathy (AIDP). Other causes for this problem are in-take of toxins, genetic metabolic disorders and chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneoropathy. Weakness is the main cause of myelinopathies which happens due to the loss of deep tendon reflexes (DTRs).

Neuronopathies: When the neurons of peripheral nervous system start dysfunction then one person starts suffering from neuronopathies. Causes of neuronopathies are numerous such as toxic elements, sensory neuronopathies, autonomic dysfunction and motor neurone diseases.

Distal axonopathy: This is another type of peripheral neuropathy which is caused due to toxic or metabolic derangement of peripheral nervous system neurons. It is the most common type of peripheral neuropathy among all the other types. The major metabolic failure causes are alcohol, renal failure, drugs, malnutrition and diabetes. Diabetic neuropathy is the most common distal axonopathy disorder which is caused because of diabetes. The lateral portions of axons start degenerating at the first hand and then the nerve’s cell bodies are affected. This situation can be brought under control by removing the noxious stimulus. The affected areas caused by distal axonopathy also loose the proper functionality of autonomic nervous system and deep tendon reflexes.
